Will Gompertz - Arts Editor, BBC News

Life story, anecdotes and Q+A this Sunday 30th October 8pm Shulman Auditorium, The Queen's College.

Will Gompertz is renowned for his quirky style of reporting not usually found on BBC News. His new job reflected the "deeper commitment to arts and music on the BBC throughout 2010", the corporation said. The post is being seen as on a par with Robert Peston's business editor role and Nick Robinson's as politics editor.

As director of Tate Media, which was launched three years ago, Gompertz was responsible for expanding the art gallery's work and appeal, including online and TV projects, major public events and magazine publishing.

Previously the Tate's director of communications, Gompertz has written for the Guardian and the Times and is currently editor-in-chief of the arts website culturecritic.co.uk.

He dropped out of school at 16 and apparently thinks he's "talentless". He has worked in the arts since he was 18, when he worked as a stagehand at Sadlers Wells theatre in London. He was a founding director of publisher Purple House and a founding director of Shots, a publishing company specialising in the moving image.

As ever our events are free to members (£10 a year, sign up on the night) or £2 for non-members.

This will be the perfect Sunday evening so make sure you give work a break for just an hour or so!
