SARA GEATER - Chief Executive Officer of Fremantle Media UK
Thursday 31st 8pm

Geater is in charge of one of the UK’s most successful production companies encompassing a group of labels including Boundless, Retort, Talkback, Thames and a digital division, FremantleMedia UK Interactive. 


Sara joined FremantleMedia UK (formerly talkbackTHAMES) as Chief Operating Officer in March 2007.   Prior to this Sara had been Head of Commercial Affairs at Channel 4 since April 2004. She has also held the post of Director of Rights and Business Affairs at the BBC where she negotiated the first Codes of Practice between the BBC and the Independent Sector.
During her time as Head of Film & TV at Avalon and before this, as Head of Production at HAL/Miramax Films (credits include Mansfield Park, Birthday Girl and Elephant Juice), Sara also built up solid experience of the independent sector.
Sara’s television career began in drama production as a Production Accountant at LWT.  She went on to work in the independent sector as a Line Producer where credits include Time Gentlemen Please, The Dawning and as a Producer on Business as Usual for Canon Films.  Following this Sara joined Channel 4 as a Drama Co-Production Executive where she oversaw 150 films including Train Spotting, Shallow Grave and drama series including GBH and Politician’s Wife.
Sara is a barrister, holds a private pilot's licence and is a Fellow of the RSA.
She will be discussing her long and varied media career, so please do come along to what promises to be an exciting interactive talk.

 LISA SMOSARSKI  and ANNA FIELDING - Editor of Stylist, London's free weekly magazine and daily email Emerald Street respectively

Creating free and easy access into the world of fashion in its widest sense, from clothes to restaurants, these two editors know what working women want. 

Smosarski, the editor of Stylist was one of ten people involved in the launching of the
magazine four years ago. It's average distribution is now 424, 107 copies a week. Stylist targets affluent 20 to 40-year-old female commuters with high end content that includes fashion, travel, beauty, people and careers news.The magazine aims to take an intelligent approach, covering a broader range of culture and tackling issues women face in their professional and personal lives.It has featured Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie, Penelope Cruz and Jennifer Aniston on its cover as well as Hilary Clinton, and the comedian, Tina Fey. Stylist is distributed for free every Wednesday in London, Brighton, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool and Birmingham, as well as in French Connection stores, airport lounges, city centre offices and gyms during the week. Since the beginning of its publication, Stylist has won numerous awards, including Johnson & Johnson Best Weekly Beauty Journalist award and the New Product of the Year 2010, Growing Business Awards.

Fielding is editor of the free email service, Emerald Street, created after the successful launch of Stylist. Delivering a similar content to Stylist, it provides subscribers with inside tips on the latest fashion and beauty trends, careers advice and recommendations for the best new bars and books around the country straight into their inbox. They are about to celebrate their first birthday. 

They will both discuss their careers and their plans for the magazine and email, giving some really exciting incite into this new form of journalism, so do come along for this interactive talk.

Michaelmas Term 2013

Hello and welcome back! Oxford Media Society have been busy over the long vac booking some fantastic speakers in Television production, Radio and fashion for this term. Have a look at what we've got in store for you here;


If you are new to the Media Society then you can become a member for a year for just £10. Alternatively entry to all our events is £2 for non-members.
